Tue Apr 29 21:39:00 -0700 2008 http://swb.bigfolioblog.com/weblog/post/40077 http://swb.bigfolioblog.com/weblog/post/40077 David Beckstead SWB in Salt Lake! I have always had a fascination with the Great Salt Lake. I love to cook with salt that is processed from there. So getting a chance to shoot by the lake was cool! Tim and Heidi were excelent hosts and fantastic people! I really enjoyed sitting on their couch talking about the world. There is some good food in Utah! They have a great studio in an artisitc district of Salt Lake City. Thanks again Tim and Heidi for hosting a wonderful workshop! Pepper Nix and Mitch put on a great Meet and Greet party with fun foods and warm personallities! Thank you guys! Mitch has been experimenting with smoke photography and it will blow you away! Pepper has a new baby boy named Zen. I think we should betroth him to Asia our daughter! Zen and Asia, cool names! The shoot started off at the lake with some old cement structures and a burned out train car. This progressed under an overpass and then on a rocky outcropping next to the lake. Funky fun stuff! The rest of the day was finding urban shadow-casting, lines, streaks of light and reflectivity. The last night we shot video light around train cars and underpasses. Totally fun! Utah is one of my favorite states! Hope you guys invite me back next year!! Tue Apr 29 21:29:00 -0700 2008 http://swb.bigfolioblog.com/weblog/post/40076 http://swb.bigfolioblog.com/weblog/post/40076 David Beckstead SWB in Oregon! The Oregon workshop was a blast! Our wonderful host Sara, invited Kassandra, Asia and I into her home. They have a baby girl (Lily Rose) just a few months older than Asia. They looked like sisters and had fun together. They have 3 little steps going from their kitchen into the living room. Asia had a blast going up and down them (her first time). Corvallis was a really cool little town with big trees and brick houses. Sara’s husband Joe works at the college and got us permission to shoot a model in the football stadium. I jumped at that and was glad I did. What a cool place to shoot! No one was there and we had the run of the place. I love that kind of thing!! Cold windy breezeways and steel structures and LINES! The lines were everywhere!! I pulled out the red veil to stand out with the green grass of the field. Fun! Later on that day we showed up at a ranch. They were working on the ranch to become a wedding venue. It would rain and stop (with great sun rays) and then rain again. No problems! It just made the sun more dramatic! We had the second day critique in an old train station fixed up for meetings. Loved it! Angela helped host also and I loved one of the shots she took! It is the first one I will post here. Wow! Thanks everyone for a great workshop!! Here are some of my favorite shots from many of the photographers at the workshop. Tue Apr 29 21:04:00 -0700 2008 http://swb.bigfolioblog.com/weblog/post/40060 http://swb.bigfolioblog.com/weblog/post/40060 David Beckstead SWB at the Fort….Fort Lauderdale that is! Jennifer and Frances Pappas put on a great workshop! Their little olive-painted salon/photo-studio was perfect with Marilyn Monroe prints religiously placed strategically around the rooms. They had great Greek food across the street where the owners hugged you when you came in! This life is so different from my own! It is almost right out of an Indie film. I loved it! Einstein Bagel breakfast and we were good to get out and shoot! First stop: Vizcaya Museum! What a great place!! I had made it a goal to shoot there and Jennifer made it a reality. With its expansive gardens combining elements of Renaissance Italian and French designs, we had enough to shoot for many hours. Next stop: Down Town Fort Lauderdale Urban Style! We even shot on the last night of the workshop with a 3rd model, video light style. We were invited into a very high-end restaurant by the owner who was watching us do are thing across the street from him. We wondered around looking for cool nooks and funky light to play with! I have a new and wonderful respect for shooting in tall parking garages. What fun! Thanks everyone for coming! Thanks Jennifer and Frances for a fun workshop! Here are some of my favorite shots from many of the photographers at the workshop. Phillip and his family were such great hosts! Not only did Phillip help out with the workshop, his family warmly welcomed me in there great home. They have a funny little shaggy dog that would have loved to take the workshop! He was everywhere! Phillip’s son, Kenny introduced me to the world of high-level Legos! I had no idea that little plastic colored pieces could ignite such a passion in a kid! I ordered 85 1.2 Lego lens from him. I hope to receive it soon! Phillips daughter Khiani had a novel-style school life full of intrigue! You could make a movie from it! The fascinating story came out during a dinning out with the family at The Macaroni Grill. She had more fun telling the 'story' than eating and I had more fun pretending to understand while chewing pasta. The workshop was amazing! We shot at Fort De Soto Park. Kind of a WWII bunker with big guns and ammunition silos. Way cool and different! We had the ocean next door but only shot under and around a pier. Beach shots are kind of boring! We shot late into the night at Centro Ybor City. We took a fresh look at a place where many of the photographers had shot before. It was all, light and lines and shadow-play! I brought out the video light and we got after when the sun went down. Thanks everyone for making this a fantastic workshop! Here are some of my favorite shots from many of the photographers at the workshop. Wed Feb 27 20:47:00 -0800 2008 http://swb.bigfolioblog.com/weblog/post/31347 http://swb.bigfolioblog.com/weblog/post/31347 David Beckstead Alabama Southern Shooting Style! Mark emailed back in forth with Kassandra and mostly about Southern food. Really! Not about hosting a workshop but about all the great Southern food he would be introducing us too. Totally funny! Kassandra has not been going to every SWB workshop but she was not about to miss this one and off we flew to Alabama. Fried green tomatoes, grits, turnip greens, barbeque, biscuits and gravy: Kassandra was in hog heaven! Asia traveled perfectly and loved everyone there. Southern hospitality is no joke…it is downright real! Mark and his family treated us so nicely and really knew how to host and make us feel welcome. Randi, Keith and Carla...Thank you! The wedding cake girl (Jonica) made Kassandra an amazing cake...just for the fun of it and made her day! I will miss Maggie the Dog the most! That dog was crazy and funny! The workshop was amazing and we photographed in some really different locations. Rain forced us into an old steel mill and refurbished and non-refurbished old cinemas. Actually after Mark said it was going to rain and we needed to shoot indoors at these places I was totally pumped to do this. I had a blast teaching how to use video lights and work great composition in such dark places. So much fun!! Man I want to shoot in a steel mill again. Wow, what lines! Mark I appreciate your generous hosting and your great family! Looks like we are going to set up one for next year. Fun! These are some of my favorite shots from a few of the photographers attending. Fri Nov 30 19:40:00 -0800 2007 http://swb.bigfolioblog.com/weblog/post/21455 http://swb.bigfolioblog.com/weblog/post/21455 David Beckstead S. Africa SWB! Oh Yeah!!! When Jaco asked me to come to South Africa to head a 2-day convention/workshop I was like…why not!! We love to travel and Africa was one of the only continents we had not traveled to yet. So I suggested we arrange it more like my SWB workshops here in the states. That was not an easy task. We had about 80 photographers and I still wanted everyone to get a chance to shoot some models. We had 2 models dressed in amazing bride dresses! We split the class up in half and I talked while I shot. Then I turned them lose! But we had big areas to shoot from and everyone moved around and found their own area to make something special out of it. We shot at a large Las Vegas style casino. You could not believe the different angles everyone got. I taught a ton of compositional training for half a day before we went out to shoot. The shooting and critiquing was one full days worth of material and style, branding and marketing took up one full day. Totally successful class and I had a blast! South Africans are so dang friendly and we loved hanging out with everyone! Kassandra and little Asia came along and we traveled to some wild game parks to see real (in your face) lions, elephants, hippos and just about any other animal you thought Africa would have. Amazing!! Thanks everyone!! Jaco you are a great host and you put together a fantastic workshop! These are some of my favorite shots from a few of the photographers attending. Sean and Melanie were amazing hosts…in their home and setting up the workshop! You guys rock! Everyone was great and totally enjoyable to hang out with and shoot with! We shot one past bride, a Country/Western singer and a girl that wants to do more modeling. Totally fun day shooting in a barn, around a farm and urban style. We shot into the night in back ally ways using building floodlights and video lights. We had more fun shooting in a cement parking garage! The Light was there and that is all we needed! What a blast!! These are some of my favorite shots from a few of the photographers attending. We shot in a covered old wood bridge, out in the forest, in very old historical homes and around some urban downtown structures. One pro model with long black boots and eyelashes and a past bride who modeled for fun. It was a great overall day and we shot a little into the night with video lights. Maryland is very green and has a Waffle House on every corner!! ;-) Another waffle with maple syrup please! You all were fun to shoot with!! These are some of my favorite shots from a few of the photographers attending. Man I had a blast shooting with you all in the red sandstone mountains of Sedona! I love that area! The models were fun and also pro photographers working with Matt. Matt hosted the workshop and made it work great on short notice. Thanks Matt!! This was all about the amazing natural environment of Arizona. Very fun! What a great time I had in Wilmington! Shane and Matt, you guys rock! You ordered up a perfect day of sunshine and fascinating locations! Ellen and Luke (our models from one of Shane’s past weddings) were willing and fun while we all shot from different angles like a gang of paparazzi! Everyone got such different fantastic imagery! We shot at an old colonial museum, WWII battleship and downtown (urban style!) Wilmington. Next day I critiqued all day and we had lunch overlooking the crashing waves of the ocean. Nice! Here are my favorites. *The NC Battleship-Gang!* *Totally Fun!* *Shane Snider* *Scott Piner* *Rob Decker* *Patty Derick* *Patricia Suzanne* *David Beckstead* *Matt McGraw* *Kevin Millard* *Jeremy Igo* *Jason Armond* *Christi Austin* *Chris Witzgall* Thanks everyone for an enjoyable workshop! Sean Watson hosted (www.seanwatsonphoto.com) a great class with some very fun places to shoot: Junkyard, with a wolf, down-town Coeur D'Alene and at the Lake. We stayed at a 400-acre B&B ranch! www.cedarmountainfarm.com Great breakfast each morning. We really enjoyed Al and Daryl as the ranch hosts! It was such a cool location some of us stayed an extra day and shot around for fun! One model was trying to go pro and one was a nice bride from a wedding Sean photographed. The critique day was great! I could not stop talking! It went longer than it should have…oh well! ;-) Sean lives in the coolest place! Coeur D'Alene is great! Grant Oakes [www.grantoakes.com](http://grantoakes.com) hosted this SWB workshop with great gusto! He has been a wonderful friend and he was the first I called when I came up with this style of workshop. For the first SWB I think it came off nicely. It was 96 degrees outside and we shot in the shade. The attendees came away with the most amazing imagery!! The models were fabulous! One pro model and two past brides. We all went over to Travis Broxton’s [www.broxtonart.com](http://broxtonart.com) studio for pizza and beer and editing for the next days critique. Back to Grant’s studio for 6 hours of critique and Q&A the next day. Many of the attendees told me that they got as much or more from the critique section as they did from the model shoot. Totally cool bunch and hot shoot!!! Thanks everyone!! I picked my favorite shot from each photographer.
